Small Bites, Quick Exits — My Framework for This Choppy Market

The market’s been giving me opportunities lately, but I’m not swinging for the fences. I’ve been taking small positions — what I call tactical nibbles — and booking gains as soon as they show up.

Structurally, markets aren’t looking great, and it’s just tough out there. Any calls feel shaky when the broader environment doesn’t give you much stability to lean on. That’s why I’m staying cautious and avoiding full-size positions.

When the foundation feels weak, preservation of capital matters more than chasing every move. I’d rather take a little here and there than overcommit and get caught on the wrong side of volatility.

The Overnight Gap Problem

The biggest reason for that caution is headline risk.

Any night, we could wake up to a sudden political shift — maybe an announcement that the war is over or that trade reform is back on the table — and the market could gap hard in either direction.

I’ve seen setups where one unexpected move turns what should’ve been a small win into a loss overnight, even when the trade had been working earlier.

With markets this sensitive, you can’t afford to be overleveraged. The only smart approach is to stay nimble, keep position sizes reasonable and avoid getting caught flat-footed by a headline you never saw coming.

Book the Win When It Shows Up

That same mindset applies to winners.

Recently, I closed out Bunge (BG) for a 25% gain. We had other fertilizer names working, but it made sense to lock that one in. Sometimes you take your money and move on — not because the idea is wrong, but because in this kind of market, gains can disappear as quickly as they appear.

In a stronger environment, maybe I’d let it run. But right now, if the market offers a clean 25%, I’m taking it.

Quick exits protect capital and keep you aligned with what the market is actually giving you instead of what you hope it will do.
