I Watched the Bots Misread Trump’s Speech in Real Time

The market is at a razor’s edge. While ceasefire hopes offered a brief reprieve, the clock is ticking toward Trump’s 8 p.m. ET Iran deadline. With a “civilization-ending” ultimatum on the table and the Strait of Hormuz at stake, tonight could redefine the global energy tape [tap to join us for Profit Panel]

Last week, I caught something fascinating in real time — and it had nothing to do with what was actually said.

I was tracking index options during Trump’s Iran speech, and the whipsaw was wild. Oil started selling off early, then suddenly shot straight to the ceiling.

The speech itself was all over the place, and honestly, it didn’t add up to anything actionable. Statements about elimination, timelines, and escalation were all mixed together, but none pointed in a clear direction.

My read? It sounded more like escalation than resolution — and yet the market ripped.

The Spike That Revealed the Game

The spike on S&P 500 (SPX) during the speech was the most non-news move I’ve seen in a while. I kept thinking, this doesn’t seem like anything, yet the market went vertical.

The reason? The machines aren’t listening — they’re scanning and reacting automatically.

These algos use large language models to parse information, but they don’t interpret it the way we do. They weight keywords like ‘Iran’ and ‘Hormuz’ on some semantic score, react to tone, and pile in without checking if it actually matters.

Meanwhile, the speech mentioned opening the Strait of Hormuz with tolls, which in practical terms changes nothing — but the bots acted like it was a major geopolitical shift.

What This Tells Us About Today’s Market

This isn’t just about one speech — it’s about knowing who you’re trading against…

When you see a spike on a headline that doesn’t pass the common-sense test, you’re watching algorithmic misinterpretation in real time.

The machines read faster than we do, but they don’t think — they just see signal, not context.

That creates opportunity if you’re patient enough to let the noise flush through and focus on what actually matters.

Right now, we are sitting in the eye of the storm. Trump’s 8:00 PM ET deadline is looming tonight, and you can bet the bots are already primed to misinterpret the first headline that drops.

I don’t chase headline pops anymore — I watch them, note the behavior, and see if the move holds or fades once the algos finish playing hot potato.

By paying attention, you can find setups that actually make sense and trade with confidence.
