Look, I’m going to cut through the noise on alternative energy because most of it is just that — noise.
Solar and wind take up significant footprint, and while renewables have lowered upfront bulk costs, they lack continuous reliability without massive storage.
Entire deserts are covered with panels where there used to be open landscape. Wind turbines? They all suck.
Oil is still the name of the game. But if there’s one alternative that compares to oil in terms of real utility, it’s nuclear.
And nuclear is coming back.
The Long-Tail Case for Nuclear
The Trump administration has issued executive orders aiming to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity from ~100 GW to 400 GW by 2050.
Key near-term policy goals call for getting 10 new large reactors under construction by 2030, alongside expanding Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
That won’t happen overnight, but the direction is clear — nuclear is moving back into the center of America’s energy strategy.
Sure, nuclear stocks may be down in the short term. But I don’t trade nuclear for the short tail. The long tail is what interests me.
Building reactors takes time, capital and regulatory approval. Politics matter too. With midterm elections approaching, energy policy can get pulled toward whatever offers the quickest political win. That could disrupt timelines, but it doesn’t change the underlying need for dependable power.
Why nuclear? Because it provides around-the-clock electricity without relying on the weather. It generates enormous amounts of power from a small physical footprint and produces very low carbon emissions over its full life cycle. Once a plant is operating, it can run for decades with high capacity and predictable fuel needs.
In plain English, it’s clean, reliable and cost-effective over the long haul.
The Fear Is Outdated
People still worry about nuclear because of the past. Three Mile Island happened in the 1970s. Chernobyl was the result of a decaying Soviet system, not modern engineering. Fukushima had its own issues, but these are the outliers everyone remembers.
The technology has gotten better — way better. New Generation III+ and IV reactor designs feature passive safety systems relying on gravity rather than active pumps, while modern SMRs reduce construction risk and expand deployment options.
This isn’t a trade I’m forcing today. It’s a thesis I’m tracking — one where patience pays and the long-term trajectory matters more than the daily chart. If you’re looking for quick pops, this isn’t it. But if you’re building a watchlist for the next decade of energy infrastructure, nuclear deserves a spot.
